Sermon Questions for July 4

What follows is a discussion guide to be used in a small group to facilitate group interaction and application in regards to the most recent sermon.

Turning Point: Jacob and His Wrestling Match

What is one question you’d like to ask God?

Read Genesis 32:22-32. What do you suppose could have been the emotional or intellectual wrestling Jacob had with God that evening before the actual physical event of the ‘wrestling match’ described?

Describe a matter over which you wrestle with God (emotionally/intellectually rather than physically).

David described two things going on in Jacob’s wrestling with God: 1) his struggle to understand God and 2) his struggle to stand under God. With your wrestlings with God in mind, how are you doing in your struggle to understand Him, to stand under Him?

How are you doing in your accepting of the below truths?
Life is hard; God is good.
Life on earth is not all that matters.
There are things that matter more in life to God than my comfort.

What does it mean to stand under God?

Are you expending too much effort to secure your own security?

Jacob emerged from this wrestling match broken and blessed. Describe your own experience of emerging from a struggle with God broken and blessed.

Close in prayer.
